Ramsgate Beach, baths

These timbers and bars are all that remain of the original Ramsgate Baths that were constructed in 1950 and demolished in 1973. A larger enclosure, incorporated the southern side of the original baths in 1975. Most of it was replaced in 1999 by a floating net structure, consisting of plastic tubes and mesh netting, weighed down by chains. This part of Botany Bay has been used for public sea-water bathing since 1930.

Brighton-Le-Sands, boardwalk and pavilion

This boardwalk beside the beach at Botany Bay, is in the southern suburb of Brighton-Le-Sands. It was a beautiful day for a walk or a bike ride along the bay, to take advantage of the blue sky. Le Sands Pavilion contains restaurants, a kiosk cafe and the bathers pavilion.

South Hurstville, Friendship Park

This small reserve in South Hurstville was recently transformed into the Ma'anshan Friendship Park (right). It celebrates the Friendship City Relationship between Kogarah City Council and Ma'anshan Municipality, a city in eastern China. The statue (left) is of Li Bai, often called the 'Immortal Poet', one of China's most important poets whose contribution to Chinese literatre influenced many later poets. It was donated by the Ma'anshan Municipality as a token of friendship to Kogarah City Council in 2009.

Banksia murals

The dreary wall outside Banksia railway station and behind the bus stop was recently brightened up by a burst of colour. The mural incorporates a flow of stainless steel Banksia leaves, a concept developed by Ruth Downes and Geoff Webster. The plant and the suburb are named after Joseph Banks, a naturalist along with Daniel Solander, on the expedition of the Endeavour led by James Cook. They explored the eastern coast of Australia in 1770 and landed at nearby Botany Bay. The first and last leaves are inscribed with the following quotes from their journals. "The great quantity of plants Mr Banks and Dr Solander found in this place occasioned my giving it the name Botany Bay" James Cook - May 1770. "Of Plants in general the countrey afforded a far larger variety than its barren appearance seemed to promise" Joseph Banks - August 1770.

Kyeemagh, Cook Park

The wind has had an interesting effect on the growth of these pines in the southern suburb of Kyeemagh. They are located along Cook Park, beside Lady Robinsons Beach on Botany Bay.

Kyeemagh creek

Muddy Creek forms the border between the suburbs of Kyeemagh and Banksia. Sydney Airport can been seen in the distance. This is one of my favourite old photos because the still waters create such a perfect reflection.

Rockdale, Bicentennial Park ponds

I was driving past Bicentennial Park at Rockdale last week and noticed that these algal blooms have covered a large proportion of the ponds here. The unusual green cover looks picturesque but I don't believe that it would be particularly good for the ponds and wildlife in the area.

Kogarah railway line sunset

Tom Uglys Bridge

Tom Uglys Bridge crosses the Georges River between the suburbs of Blakehurst and Sylvania. The truss span (left) which opened in 1929 is quite a contrast to the duplicated box girder span (right) which opened in 1987. When the original bridge was built, it was known as the Georges River Bridge, but was renamed to distinguish between the various bridges on the river following the opening of the Captain Cook Bridge in 1965 and the Alfords Point Bridge in 1973. Tom Uglys Bridge took its name from the southernmost part of Blakehurst, known as Tom Uglys Point, which is believed to be named after local resident Tom Huxley and transformed by the mispronunciation by local Aborigines.

Wolli Creek palms

These palms and flowers are a welcome new addition beside the Princes Highway at Wolli Creek, sitting in Cahill Park beside the Cooks River.

Carss Park Tidal Baths

The Tidal Baths at Carss Park are a protected swimming area on Kogarah Bay, surrounded by Carss Bush Park, a popular recreational area. The Autumn clouds created a beautiful sunset.

Arncliffe Railway Station sunrise

With Daylight Saving extended to the end of March now, this gave me opportunities to witness some beautiful sunrises on the way to work. Here is Arncliffe Railway Station a couple of days ago, just before 7am.

Blakehurst marina at sunset

These two photos were taken only a short while apart at sunset after a hot summer's day. The boat was moored on the edge of the marina on Shipwrights Bay at Blakehurst, looking out onto the Georges River.

Kyle Bay

Kyle Bay is a small suburb on the northern shore of the Georges River. This view of the bay and the river beyond it is from Merriman Reserve. Many of the homes situated on the bay have their own private jetty for boats.

Kogarah Community Centre

Kogarah Community Centre is located on the corner of Railway Parade and Belgrade Street, Kogarah. The turreted building was built in 1892 and was originally the site of the Kogarah Post Office until 1974.

Brighton-Le-Sands sculpture

A statue of 1896 Greek gold medallist Spyros Louis stands in Cook Park at Brighton-Le-Sands, on the shore of Botany Bay. The sculptor was Pavlos Kougioumtzis. Brighton-Le-Sands is a centre of the Greek community in Sydney and features many Greek businesses and restaurants.
